You are privileged to be a software developer!
If you can read this:
- You are not starving or lack food supply.
- You have attended at least one year of primary school education — that’s why you can read and write.
- Your country is not in a war.
- You have access to electricity.
- You have at least one electronic device (PC, mobile phone,..) to visit Medium.
- You have access to the Internet.
- You don't have to work 16 hours per day, so you have the time to read.
If you are a software developer:
- You have at least one PC.
- You have an opportunity with higher education, to learn to program.
- It’s not very hard for you to get a job as a software developer.
At the moment, I and my colleague sit comfortably at our working desk with a laptop, in a beautiful office with fresh cool air. Next to the laptop, there is always a cup of coffee or a glass of clean drinking water.
Because of this huge privilege, we should be very happy and satisfied all the time, but usually, we aren’t…
We have Imposter syndrome and self-doubting about our knowledge. We fear that we know lesser programming language/framework than other developers. We fear that we cannot catch up with the revolution of technology.
We said that we are always stressful about daily tasks (bugs, features,..). We said that we always need to work overtime (OT), therefore don’t have time to sleep properly.
And we said that we have no life…
I’m a “community guy”, I have joined many communities to see how other developers live. And this picture comes up to my newsfeed very often.
We said that we don’t have time, money, energy, girlfriend (or at least a normal friend),... We said that we don’t have any reason to live.
We keep convincing that we work like a typical labor worker. We compare our job with a marketing guy — who has just receive bonus money for a new contract signing, or a tour guide — who can travel anywhere he wanted to. Or even a Grab taxi driver, who can earn money without spending years studying at University.
Why does this happen to many of us?
The human brain has evolved in such a way that it always strives for more and more to secure its survival. That leads to dissatisfaction.
The life we can live is wonderful, so we should be grateful for every experience we have.
In my home town — where people still settled down to farm — they spent the whole day hard-working on the field to produce food to take care of the survival of their family directly.
Or spending all day on the street, standing, to sell vegetables.
Even in the city that I’m currently living and working, there are many homeless people.
Did they ask whether their lives have meaning?
Please, be optimistic and never stop learning!
Instead of getting annoyed by everyday worries, try to live and learn by experience everything that come up to your life.
You are a software developer, you can earn an average income of $100,000 annually, which is above the medium rate compare to other jobs.
As I said above, you can work in a beautiful office with fresh cool air. You can make any app, any game that you want, you create your own world.
And the most important thing is: you are involving in 4.0 Industrial Revolution, to create awesome things that serve humanity, use technology to help people live a better life!
Good things come to those who hustle!
I am actively live my own life by doing everything I want, keep learning by experience everything that comes up. I am enjoying my life! By looking at the bigger picture, all my worries seem to vanish.
I taste a bit of coffee while wondering about what I’m going to eat for dinner and which Netflix movie should I watch.
And I am very grateful for it!
